Allowing DJs to schedule/modify the schedule of their shows

Context: We have a lot of one hour shows and djs (~150). Our schedule changes 3 times a year. DJs graduate. DJs spend a semester off campus. DJs go home for summer.

Problem 1: When a dj is taking a break (90% of djs during the summer), we pretty much need to disable 90% of our shows. When the djs come back there doesn’t seem to be a way for them to adjust their time slot (which is a messy thing as well) because they can’t find the show, because it’s not on the calendar. (OK. It is on the calendar, but they have to back to whenever they were last on the air and update the show.)

Possible ways to deal with this problem:

  1. At a minimum, allow djs to edit their calendar from their own home pages, i.e., show a list of their past programs that they can click and modify. Don’t make them search in the calendar.
  2. Figure out a way for Admin/Editor to upload the new schedule as a CSV, etc. file. This one is tricky and I can see why you’re avoiding it.

Problem 2: Every semester, pretty much all shows go on hiatus. This takes too many clicks for the Admin, and whereas we could request that djs 1) go onto the calendar page, 2) find their show, 3) edit their show so that it has a end date at the end of the semester, this is too many clicks for djs during exams, packing, etc. It’s hard enough to get them to do playlists.

  1. Maybe have a list of shows on the djs home page. Djs can click on a show. The show page has a big red button that djs can press called “Hibernate my show” which lets them choose a date for their last show of the semester.
  2. Show a list of current shows with a check box next to each one. It would look roughly like the dj list. Somewhere there’s a big red button that says “Hibernate Selected Shows”. It pops up a date. All those shows get an end date.
  3. See #2 in previous problem.
  4. Here’s a fun one: We can drag and drop to change the calendar, right? Add a “hibernate” bin on the calendar page that the Admin can drop show into. Dropping the shows into this bin sets their end date. The Admin needs to be able to change this date arbitrarily–it can’t just be the date the show was dragged into the bin–because there’s no telling when the Admin is going to get around to this.

Let me know if I need to clarify something. Also, I could really use this fix by the start of classes, if that’s ok.
